BOTTLE MANUFACTURING.

POSITION EN NEW ZEALAND. REQUEST FOR PROTECTION. An appeal for the assistance of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association in securing adequate tariff protection for the bottle-making industry in* New Zealand was contained, in a letter from the Australian Glass Manufacturers' Company, Limited, Penrose, which was discussed at a meeting of the association yesterday. The letter stated that owing to competition from overseas, and the inadequate tariff, it was found necessary to cease manufacturing in December for three or four months. A copy of a letter sent by the company to the Minister of Customs was .Uso read. It was stated that the glass and bottlemaking industry of New Zealand was seriously retarded by a totally inadequate tariff The sales of the company for the four months ended July 1 were over 40 per cent, lower than for the corresponding period of the previous year, notwithstanding that the company had haen compelled to reduce prices to meet, overseas competition. The closing down of the factory would mean that 80 men would be thrown out of employment. Mr. J, A. C. Allum, chairman, said it would be regrettable if the works closed down through lack of reasonable protection. The position had never been satisfactory so far as the industry was concerned. It ws® decided to refer the correspondence to the Minister of Customs, and a committee was set up to investigate the matter locally.
