DIXIELAND LICENCE.
APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL. CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. QUESTION OF SUPERVISION. An application for renewal of the licence of Dixieland Cabaret at Point Chevalier oame before the Auckland City Council last evening and after some discussion was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee for consideration and report. It was stated the report of the superintendent and inspector of police on the appliction was favourable, but when the Mayor, Mr. 0. Baildon, moved that the licence should be granted, Mr. A. J. Entrican suggested the matter should be refered to the Finance and Ijegal Committee to .'.ec whether the council could not have a bylaw gyving it some control over persons managing such establishments. Mr. Entrican said there should be some responsibility resting on the management and this could be achieved by the framing of a by-law. Miss E. Melville said that when the council held an inquiry into the conduct of the cabaret, following on a police prosecution, it was definitely stated that liquor had been consumed on the premises, although the management denied ;t. Miss Melville moved that the application should go to the committee for a report as to the desirability of requiring structural alterations to the interior of the building to make adequate supervision possible. The Mayor explained that the council had already Sent a remit for consideration at the next municipal conference, providing for some measure of control over the management of such places. In the meantime the police did not object to the granting of the licence.
The application was finally sent to the Finance and Legal Committor for consideration of the points raised.
