" His desire to be of assistance was probably actuated by a desire to commit theft," said Chief-Detective Ward of William Henry Gardiner, a hotel porter, aged 36 years, who in the Magistrate's Court to-day denied the theft of four ladies' hats belonging to Freda Parkinson. The chief detective stated that the sisters of the Seatoun Convent were giving a concert last Thursday evening. Gardiner " butted in " uninvited and made himself busy by helping them.
