WELLINGTON. Thursday,

The retiring Secretary of the Post Office, Mr. A. T. Markman, speaking at a farewell gathefing in his honour to day, predicted the revenue of the Post and Telegraph Department in 1940 would be at least £7,000,000, the expenditure £5,500,000 and t the number of employees 25,000. The Savings Bank figures would reach £70.000,000, telegrams and tolls would number 25,000,000 and there should be at least 250,000 telephone subscribers. Last year, said the Postmaster-General, Hon. W. Nosworthy, the Post and Telegraph Department handled £205,000,000. Iu 1890, when Mr. Markman joined the department, the revenue was £325,000, and now it was £3,250,000. In the last 10 years the volume of business has doubled.
