GRAFTON BRIDGE
NEW SUR.FACE TO BE LAID. COUNCIL TO CALL TENDERS. Tenders are to be called for the surfacing of Grafton Bridge in bituminous concrete. This decision was made by the City Council last evening or. the recommendation of tlio Works Committee. The city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, suggested that the whole of the surface of the bridge should be relaid from the alignment of Symonds Street to the end of the bridge, excluding the approach from the Grafton Road end, the maintenance agreement for which did not expire until April 30, 1929. Three quotations for tho work had been obtain.ed, the prices varying from £IOOO to over £ISOO for surfacing the area of 2680 square yards.
The carrying out of the work would necessitate the closing of the bridge to vehicular traffic for about one week.
The engineer also stated that he had obtained an estimate of from £3BOO to £4OOO for the supply of a " hot-mix" bituminous asphalt plant, bnt, unless it was the. intention of the council to carry out a considerable amount of this class of work, he did not consider the purchase of such a plant was justifiable at present.
