LADIES' MILE.

Sir, —Work on the road itnd footpaths in Ladies' Mile has now been going on for some months, and whoever is responsible for the roadway being left in its present disgraceful and unfinished state should be severely called to account. The section from Peach Parade to Marua Road (the Ellerslie boundary) is a continuous chain of deep ruts, pot-holes and protruding boulders of scoria, ornamented on each side by a strip of loose metal, and. leaving out the question of inud, would seriously rival any out-back road. Some months ago the residents of Abbott's Way were promised that their footpaths would receive attention " as soon as those in the Mile (then under construction) were fixed up." These footpaths (like the road) are in many places still uncompleted, and we should like to know when they will be finished so that the footpaths in Abbott's Way can claim attention. It would also be interesting to know the total cost of the recent work done in Ladies' Mile, as the majority of the men employed seemed unwilling to even attempt to earn their wages by doing a fair day's work, and for every chain finished at least two could have been done, without undue effort, in the same time. The foreman, no doubt, had his men stretched over too wide an area to watch them all, but the ratepayers are surely entitled to be assured that their money is spent to the* best advantage. I am sure no one regrets thai, work was found for a number of unemployed, but we certainly have a right to expect value for the money spent and we are not getting it. Strange to say, the best worker had only one arm. George S. Jackson. Abbott's Way, Remuera.
