THE FREEZING COMPANIES.

LITTLE CHANCE OF MERGER. ' FARMERS' UNION DISCUSSION. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday It was stated to-day at a meeting of tbe Domiuion executive of the New Zealand Farmers'. Union that the proposal made recently that the co-operative freezing companies in New Zealand should merge was not a practicable proposition. The shareholders of the Whakatane company opposed it. The freezing company, in tho Wairarapa supported the Meat Board's policy in the matter. . . * While not pretending to know a great deal about the. freezing industry, Mr. C. C. Munro (Auckland) said he did know the vitals were being "chewed out" of the co-ODerative freezing companies in the Dominion and unless the Government or the Meat Board did something speedily to relieve the situation the New Zealand works would soon be at the mercy of the wealthy overseas meat concerns. Mr. W. J. Poison said the trouble was that the big meat concerns would not acree to amalgamate and they could not fix rates which would pay the smaller works, as those would give the bigger works, which could kill and freeze much more cheaply, immense profits. Mr. Jolt (Havelock North) contended that, ns the farmers of New Zealand had invested the Meat Board with supreme powers it should slip in and take whatever action was necessary. Mr. C. P. Lynch (Paekakariki) declared that there would be no solution of the difficulty until the Meat Board followed the lead of tho Dairy Control Board and; assumed absolute control " PRICE'S "—THE INEXPENSIVE DRINK.
