VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE.

REGISTRATION IN SYDNEY. SEVERAL. SHOCKS RECORDED. ORIGIN 2025 MILES NORTH. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 10.55 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 27. A violent earthquake about 2025 miles to the north of Australia was recorded to-day at the Riverview Observatory, Sydney. Five minutes later another shock was registered. So strong was this that the instruments were upset. Still later there were five or six slighter shocks. The distance given in ihe message would seem to indicate that the earthquake recorded occurred somewhere along an imaginery line drawn from Hongkong on the west to Hawaii on the east. If tho disturbance was duo north from Australia the Bonin Islands, Japaneso possessions in the North Pacific, might bo involved.
