STOWAWAYS FROM AUSTRALIA MEN IN SEARCH OF WORK. "In the past these cases have been dealt with leniently, but in this case the shipping company asks that the accused should he ordered to pay their fares." stated Sergeant Calwell in the Police Court yesterday, when Edward Thomas Burman, aged 23, and Robert McLaren, aged 19, were charged with stowing away on the Mamma at Sydney. The ship's purser said the accused were discovered by an engineer in a recess in the stokehold when the vessel was two days out from Sydney. According to their story they came aboard the night before the Manama left Sydney. The accused, who are labourers, said they could not find work in Australia and decided to try their luck in this country. "I have trekked over the Blue Mountains in search of work." McLaren said. "I will convict you and order you to j come up for sentence in three months' i time,", said the magistrate. Mr. Cutten. j "If you pay your fares of £7 10s nothing | more will be beard about this." PRISON FOR VAGRANT. "I am going to adopt an unusual course with you." said the magistrate, in sentencing Christopher Gallagher, aged 31, to three months' imprisonment on a charge, of vagrancy. "That will teach you to work and bring you on to the rails . again. You were a good worker until six months ago, but apparently you have been slipping ever since." Three constables said accused had not bee;i working and had been lounging about hotels. BREACH OF PROBATION. A charge of a breach of his probation was admitted by Herbert Cogan, aged 28. I The probation officer said accused was admitted to probation in December, 1925, for two years, and he had not reported since April. Counsel, in asking for leniency, said accused's "health was very bad. Accused was convicted and discharged upon the understanding that lie continued to report to the pxobation.„officer.
