SHIPPING SCHEMES.

ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA. LINE OF OIL-DRIVEN VESSELS. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Oct, 25. Hard upon the heels of tho announcement of Sir J. D. Connolly's scheme for a fast line of steamers between England and Australia comes the information that the Secretary of State for tho Dominions has laid before the Cabinet proposals made by the Australian Chilled Meat and Food Supplies, Limited, for a weekly service of oil-driven 16-knot steamers. These would help to exploit the company's Western Australian concessions. The directors include former Governors of South Australia, Lieut.-Colonel Sir H. L. Gal way and Lieut.-Colonel Sir A. Weigall. A technical expert; Mr. K. I\ Wilson, says the company is more concerned with opening up tho north-west than with fighting Sir James for mail carriage. Its ships will complete the voyage to Australia, he says, in. 26 days. Tho company is only awaiting tho approval of the Australian and British Governments. Its ships will confine their attention to •the north-west ports of Western Australia. The scheme is virtually the one which was originally suggested by Mr. F. G. Manning. "There is room for both companies," was Sir James Connolly's comment, SIR J. CONNOLLY'S PLANS. EMPIRE TRADE PROSPECTS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, Oct, 26. In a letter to tho Financial Times in reference te his fast-ship scheme Sir James Connolly says it should he carefully noted that it is something far more than a faster service to Australia only that is now proposed. Ifc is a fast service to Australia, via India, calling at Bombay both ways. The scheme opens up a prospect of large trade not only between Britain and Australia, but between Britain and India and Australia and India. Sir James says the proposed new line would base its prospects of success on all-the-year-round earnings on both halves of its ronto as well as on other sources of revenue, such as mail subsidies and migrants' passage money. >
