FIRST MEETING OF COUNCIL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Tuesday: The newly-constituted Council of Scientific Research held its first meeting today and was welcomed on behalf of the Government by the Acting-Prime Minister, Hon. W. D. Stewart. He said Mr. Coates took a great interest in the council and in a letter he had expressed a hope that it would soon be in operation. The chairman, Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, emphasised the fact that the public must not look for immediate results from the council's deliberations. The country was passing through a critical stage of its economic history and science would have to come to the aid of the producers.
