BABY FROM A PRISON.
NEED FOR OPERATION. Tho grey walls of San Quentin Prison were called upon to play their most unhappy role recently, says a San Francisco paper, in separating a mother from her one-year-old baby girl while doctors at Mt. Zion Hospital battled to save tho little one's life. Unable to be at tho child s bedside, Mrs. Bessie Globenfelt, serving five years for forgery, gave permission for an operation and"j:hen waited for the news that would spell the greatest joy or sorrow. Baby Jean Ruth, tho patient, was born behind the barriers that to-day kept her mother from her side. Mrs. Globenfelt entered the penitentiary from Sacramento in May, 1925, and in October gavo birth to her daughter. The baby's father was also committed to the penitentiary for the offence for which his wife was convicted.
Arrangements were made with tta Children s Welfare Bureau for the care of the baby, and it has been in their custody. A few days ago Baby Jean was taken ill Physicians foun'd that an operation was necessary to save her life. The news was given to -the mother, who gave permission for the surgical treatment.
