BUDGET OF VICTORIA.
NEW TAX ON BETTING. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Oct. 14. The Victorian Treasurer, Sir Alexander Peacock, delivered his Budget speech in the Legislative Ai.st.wbly to-d«y. He said tiiero would bo no alteration in the rates of income tax. New taxation on betting, which was estimated to increase the revenue by £417,000, would take the form of a tax of per cent, on the turnover of p.a,ch bookmaker. The present stamp duties oh betting tickets and licences, or permits, would be abolished, but a licence fee of £1 would be charged on each bookmaker's certificate. The restoration of the stamp duties on bills of oxchange and on promissory notes to rates which ruled before the war was also announced by the Treasurer.
