The map shows the provinces in which the fighting between the Red Army and the forces of General Sun Chuan-fang has taken place. On the west is the city of Wuchang, the defenders of which capitulated to the Reds after a lengthy siege. To the south-east is Kiu-kiang, which has also fallen. Sun was expected to make a stand at Nanking, his seat of government, to the north-west of Shanghai, The locality of the latest outrage —an attack by Chinese soldiers on a French gunboat—between Wusueh and Kiu-kiang, is shown on the map southeast of as is Ningpo, on the east coast, where an anti-foreign outburst has occurred.
