FRANKLIN COUNTY ROADS.
MONEY FOR MAINTENANCE. MORE ASSISTANCE SOUGHT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKF.KOHE, Thursday. The Franklin County Council met todav, the chairman, Mr. IT. Wilcox, residing. The Internal Affairs Department forwarded a copy of a Gazette notico abolishing the Waikato River Board District. The engineer. Mr. J. F. McArthur, reported that the increase in trafiic on the main highways through the county was placing an ever-increasing financial burden on the ridings concerned. As members considered that the traffic was chiefly from outside the district, it was decided to ask the Highways Board to increase its rate of contribution up 10 £2 for £l. The council agreed to take steps to have the metalling on Hull's Hermitage Road put iii hand forthwith. A request from 12 ratepayers for the formation of a special area for a loan of £I4OO for metalling the Ostrich Road, Patumahoe, from Woodhousn Hill Road to the Waiuku-Drury Road, was granted. The engineer was instructed to make an estimate with a view to the raising of a special loan for metalling Dyke's Road, Karaka Riding. Objections were received to the inclusion of five properties in the Waiau PaMackenzie's Road special rating area. It was decided to refer the objections to a magistrate for decision. The engineer reported that the Government. subsidies on the special loans for the following roads had been increased from £1 for £2, to £1 for £l-Rogers' Road-Tramway Road to Puni: Tramway Road, Glonbrook Station, to Titi; tJrqut hart'? Road, Karaka, Yates' Road, Buckland. Authority for the expenditure of a further £406 2s 3d in Government money on the Waiau-Papakura Road had been received and tliis would make funds sufficient, to complete the construction and metalling of the, whole road. It was to offer to pay half the cost of a sea-wall to stop erosion on the Sandspit Road. Waiuku, if the landowners concerned would pay the other half.
