SALVATION ARMY.

TO-DAY'S STREET COLLECtION A street collection in aid of the "SelfDenial" week of the Salvation Army will be made in the city and suburbs to-day, when the public will be afforded an opportunity of contributing to the funds of the Army. The "Self-Denial" appeal is the Army's principal source of income, and the inspiration for this effort came to the late General Booth in 3836, when it seemed that financial difficulties would compel the abandonment of the enterprise. A "young man. hearing of the Army's plight, volunteered to do without pudding for twelve months, and donate the savings to help carry on the work. General Booth replied: "No, I don't want young men to do without, pudding for twelve months, but it will do them no harm to go without for one week." The idea -was given effect to, and "Self-Denial" week became an institution which has saved the Salvation Army for the world.
