MISHAP TO THE LIMITED

"SMALL SLIP ENCOUNTERED. THE POSTAL VAN DERAILED. TRAIN HELD UP ALL NIGHT. [BY TELEGRATH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] MARTON. Monday. A serious slip occurred on the railway line near Greatford when the north-bound limited express was passing late last evening. A passenger on the train stated that when (.he train was climbing Westoe Hill about midnight a sudden application of the brakes was felt and when the train stopped it was found that the engine had ploughed through a small slip. A second slip then descended, striking an empty carriage next to the engine, and also the postal van immediately behind, derailing the roar wheels of the latter. Fortunately the coupling arms, though twisted, stood tho strain, and no other damage was Sustained. The track was only slightly interfered with. It is thought that the heavy slip steadily pushing against the train caused a slight de- | railment. No passengers wero hart, but they experienced discomfort oj sitting in the train all night. The department rushed a breakdown gang to the scene and the van was replaced early this morning. At one place the earth from the slip reached as high as the engine lights and the carriage windows. The line is now clear, although the services are disorganised. SLIPS ON NAPIER LINE. DISLOCATION OF SERVICES. [BY TEI.EGE.APF.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Monday.
