SIR ARTHUR MYERS.
Death has claimed in Sir Arthur Myers a former citizen of Auckland to whom the community owes a deep debt of gratitude. It is years now since he played an active part in civic life. ■ The days when he occupied the mayoral chair have receded considerably into the perspective of time. But even if there were a disposition to forget the personal service that Sir Arthur Myers gave to Auckland, tangible monuments to his generosity and his public spirit remain to keep his memory alive. Auckland has been very fortunate in the long list of public benefactors from whose munificence she has drawn benefits. He who has just passed away was not least among them. His public service did not end with the giving of material gifts. Beyond his work in civic affairs, already mentioned, Sir Arthur Myers also played a distinguished part in the wider sphere of national politics. As member of Parliament, as a holder of portfolios in two Ministries, he had his share in guiding its destinies. During the war he was at the head of the Department of Munitions and Supplies, fulfilling a task which was no sinecure. Even after withdrawing from public life, and leaving the Dominion, his interest in New Zealand and his generosity toward public needs did not cease. All counted, the country, and Auckland in particular, has good reason to remember long the name of Sir Arthur Myers, whom death has taken away so suddenly.
