CRUISER AT OPOTEKI.
; SAILORS UNABLE TO LAND. 1 TOWNSPEOPLE DISAPPOINTED. ; [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI. Friday. The cruiser Dunedin arrived off Opotiki at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. The seas were very rongh and the bar was unworkable until late in the afternoon, and Commodore Swabey considered the landing was too rough to enable the officers and men to come ashore. Elaborate arrangements had been made for entertaining the naval visitors. A fleet of motor-cars was in readiness and [. the schoolchildren from Toatoa and Waij mana, over 20 miles distant, came in to j Opotiki expecting to be able to visit the warship. The cruiser gave a good display with its searchlights last evening, which was watched with great interest by hundreds of people who congregated at places of vantage.
