CLAIMS OF LOCOMOTIVE MEN. STATEMENT BY SECRETARY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWV COE RESPONDENT. ] "WELLINGTON. Friday. A reply t-o the statement of the Hon. F. J. Rolleston, Acting-Ministef of Railways, was made today by Mr. W. McArley, general secretary of the Locomotive Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners' Association. He repudiated tho suggestion of the Minister that his association had dispensed with conferences "My statement," he said, "simply set out tho men's grievances. It is to bo noticed that the Minister, in his reply, did not indicate that the -wages claims would bo further considered. Prior to his departure for the Imperial Conference, Mr. Coates said the granting of the claims would involve about £170,000, and he closed tho door by announcing that these could not bo granted in view of the prices of the country's primary products. He made no suggestion, howover, whether tho granting of a lesser amount would be considered."
