"PILGRIM'S PROGRESS."

RARE COPY SOLD AGAIN. It was stated on this page last Saturday that the "first edition" copy of "Pilgrim's Progress," which was sold in London on July 26, by Messrs. Sotheby for £6BOO, had been returned by the purchasers, Messrs. Quaritch, on the ground that it was a copy of the second issue of the first edition of Bunyan's great work. English papers just to hand state that the book has again been acquired by Messrs. Quaritch on behalf on an English customer for an amount smaller than that obtained at the auction sale on July 26. Messrs. Sotheby, since the return of the volume, had acted on behalf of the owner, Mr. Warner. When the volume was returned by Messrs. Quaritch that firm again made an offer for purchase by private treaty on behalf of an English customer who was desirous that the volume should not leave the country. Mr. Warner decided to accept. Messrs- Sotheby stated that they had again delivered tho book to Messers. Quaritch, that it had been sold, and "the matter is nov^closed." The manager for Messrs. Quaritch when seen refused to disclose the name of the purchaser or the price that has been paid for the work, although he said the figure was naturally not so heavy as that originally offered. The book has been purchased for an English enstomer, so that it will not leave the country.
