AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS.

The fact that, over 2000 entries have been received for the annual Auckland musical and elocutionary festival gives some indication of the amount of talent which has been lying practically dormant, awaiting such an opportunity as this to manifest itself to tins public. There are no less than 813 actual performers taking part in the festival, including vocalists, instrumentalists, elocutionists, fancy and national dancers, humorists, character recitalists. junior and senior choirs anu combined ballets. Nearly one hundred of those are from outside Auckland, thus investing the festival with much more interest than would otherwise be the case. Three, halls have been engaged for the period between October 14, and 26, arid the judges will have a big task to select at the day sessions those who will contest the finals at the evening performances. Lovers of Highland and National dancing will be pleased to note that these classes will be. held continuously from (lio morning of Thursday next till noon on Saturday, October 16, while fin tbo latter evening all the. finals will bo decided at a, special .lemonst ration '•oncert at the Unity Hall. The eliminating tests for the musical and elocutionary sections will bo heard at. the Town Hall commencing also on the morning of Thursday next, and the various finals will bo included in the evening programmes at that, hall. Special attention has been'paid to making ihe evening sessions attractive, to the general public, whose support is so necessary to the sue -. cess of the movement,- and some very fine performances are expected in the finals. The "feature" nights will be Monday, October 18: senior choirs, Saturday, October 23, first demonstration concerts, Monday, October 25, Labour Night, concert (including finals of school choirs), and Tuesday, October 26, grand final demonstration by first prise winners.
