Tn thanking the convention of the American Federation of Labour to-day at Detroit for contributions in aid of tho British coalminers who are on strike Mr. George Hicks, chairman of the executive council of the British Trades Union Congress said : " Nobody with a spark of intelligence desires a repetition of the terrible industrial warfare which a general strike involves, but wo cannot escape the stem and awful realities. Wo are compelled to make our plans on a conscious realisation of actualities. " In Britain to-day tho two sides are preparing for tho coining struggle. Tt would appear that a general striko—more interne and more formidable in character than tho one we recently experienced—ia inevitable."
