There was remarkably steady and active competition throughout the series in spite of the miscellaneous character of the offerings. Continental buyers dominated Merinos and also gave good support to medium and fine crossbrcds. There were numerous withdrawals of second-hand speculators' lots, the prices for which havo shown slight irregularities. | The hc/me trade supported slipes and clothing wools generally, also cheaper crossbrcds, but Bradford was very reserved in Merino and combing woql. Tho tpne of tho market indicated a general demand'. The sales closed in great confidence at full opening rates. Compared with July closing sales, Merinos, greasy, were fully five per cent. up. Some of tho finer grades were slightly more. Scoureds were five per cent, up, crossbrcds, medium, 10 per cent, up, and fine five per cent. up. Lower grades were 7£ to 10 per cent, up, slipes and scoureds five per cent. up. In lamb's wool Merinos were five to 10 per cent, up, and crossbreds five per cent. At the Sydney woo] sales to-day competition was strong, and the best rates for the wpek were secured for most lines. Dusty fleece wools a little irregular. Comebacks and crossbreds 'met with very strong competition at full late rates. Greasy Merino sold to 26^d. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report having received the following cablegram from their London house, dated October 6:—Wool sales: The market closed very firm, with active competition. Continental buyers were the principal operators for Merinos, English buyers operating actively for crossbreds. Scoured Merinos were Id to 2d higher; greasy halfbred, to 2d higher; greasy crossbred, fine, l£d to 2d higher; greasy crossbred, medium and coarse, Id to lid higher; scoured crossbred, Id to 2d higher; slipes, crossbreds, Id to 2d higher; lambs, crossbred, id to L]d higher; Merino lambs, scoured, best, 5 per cent, higher; other descriptions Merino lambs a shade lower; crossbred lambs, 5 per cent, higher, The number of bales offered was 196,000, made up as follows;—Australia,'B2,7B3; New Zealand, 76,093; Cape, 6077; South America, 22,464. Tho number of bales sold was 169,000, of which the Continent bought 93,000, Home trade 75,000 and America 1000. The number of bales carried forward was 34,000, of which 17,500 were not offered. The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company held its annual spring cattlo fair at tho Coromandel yards yesterday. Tho yarding was a record for tho district, 812 head of cattlo being penned. They were above average Quality in good condition. Buyers were presont from all parts of tho Waikato and Mauraki Plains'and practically all tho stock was sold ftt satisfactory prices. The entries comprised ISO four and five-year-old bullocks; 210 yearlings and three-year-old steers: 140 store cows; 175 yearling and two-year-old heifers; 85 dairy cowa and heifers; and 20 bullocks. t Tho following wero tho prices obtained:— Pour pens of extra good fat bullocks, on account M.
