MILITARY CARNIVAL.
A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. A carnival arranged by the Ist Battalion of tlao Auckland Regiment io provide' funds for the regimental queen, Boadicea, in tho forthcoming military pageant, was. successfully launched in tho Drill Hall.. Rutland Street, last evening. There was plenty of amnsement for patrons, and a wide selection of games and other attractions kept everyone entertained. The side-showmen, who are members of the legiment, proved very enterprising in providing amusement. Tho rabbit race, the most ingenious of all the games, developed a fault, but it should be in full swing by this evening. However, there was a wide selection of other games, and there were also guessing competitions. A special feature, which added to the enjoyment of the evening, was the dancing of Miss Bettina Edwards and two pretty ballets. Miss Edwards, who is tho regimental queen, dances cleverly and gracefully, and the ballet groups were all very well arranged. Several selections by the regimental band wero much appreciated. A further attraction was tho opportunity given for dancing. As a result of tho opening evening the carnival committee hopes to secure a largo number' of tickets to support their queen. The members are well pleased with the response from the public, and anticipate even larger numbers will attend this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. It is hoped to continue the cf.rnival next week with a change of programme.
