[WHANGAREI MEETING. EDEN HALL WINS GOLD CUP. AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR DAVE. [ftY TELEGRAPH. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT. ] WHANGAREI. Thursday. Tho Whangarei Racing Club a Spring Meeting was opened to-day at Kensington Park in fine weather and before a good attendance. The track was slightly but the racing was excellent, the finisn of the Hikurangi Handicap, in which the first ieven horses were almost in lino at the winning post, being especially exciting. Several warm favourites were beaten, but most of the winners were well backed. The Whangarei Gold Cup was won by Eden Hall, who was always in front and if-ored in fine style. Following the event the handsome gold cup donated by Mr. J. J. White was presented to the owner pf the winner, Mr. C. G. Macindoe. The president, Mr. R. G. Hosking, in a short speech, said he regretted the absence of ihe donor, who is visiting England. He paid a tribute to the fine sportsmanship of the winning owner, to whom Mrs. Hosking then handed the cup. The totalisator handled .C 19.559 10s, compared with £22,015 10s on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £2456. Twelve started in tho Maiden Plate and Royal Flight was £56 better favourite than Lady Spalpeen. Edifice, who was on the inside, began quickest, but was soon supplanted by Royal Flight, who led along the back with Rina Mangu, Edifice, Bold Front and Lady Spalpeen following in close order. Royal Flight led into the straight just ahead of Lady Spalpeen, with St. Lucas and Delightment handy. Once they straightened up Lady Spalpeen challenged, but Royal Flight stayed on to win by half b head. St. Lucas was a length away third, with Delightment a close fourth. Then come Rina Mangu and Joy Gem. Ability to begin smartly was a factor in Royal Flight's success, for he got " clear of a bunched lot quickly. Kensington Handicap to Dave. For the Kensington Hack Handicap Te Koroke was a good favourite, with Dave and Arch Arrow also heavily backed. From an even start Arch Arrow, on the rails, was first awav and led along the back, closely attended by Highflown, To Koroke and Killute. These positions were maintained to tho (op, whore Marblo Mount and Dave moved up. Arch Arrow was first into the straight from Highflown, Te Koroke, Killute and Dave. Onca in line for home Dave came fast on tho outside and won by a long neck from Te Koroke, who beat Arch Arrow by a length. Killuto was fourth, followed by Winsome Boy, Highflown and Marble Mount. Dave won well after beginning from the outside, Te Koroke notched his third second on the course and may soon win. Arch Arrow had every chance, but may do better on top of the ground. Wedding March was first favourite for ■the Huanui Hurdles, with Glenidle and Royal Form next in request. Royal Form led past the stand, closely followed bv Lady Patience, with Hangawera, Glenidle and Advent following at' intervals and the favourite next. There wbb not much change in the positions along the back except that Advent moved up. Royal Form was first round the bend, fclnsely attended by Lady Patience and Advent, with Glenidle six lengths back. Royal Form jumped the last fence well and stayed on to beat Advent by half a length. Glenidle was third, half a length away. Lady 'Patience and Hangawera were next to finish. Advent finished on well and should be prominent on Satnrday. Glenidle made up a good deal of ground from tho turn and might have been closer if he had ngt plmost unseated his rider at the last fence. Wedding March was never going nicely and was always a good way back.. Mastor Noel fell at the last fence. Issue Between Stable Mates. Nine started in the Whangarei Gold Cup fcnd it was a fine betting race, Barometer being a shade better favourite than Eden Hall, with Ruapapa also in strong demand. Eden Hall, -who had the inside position, jumped out cleanly, but was soon joined by Sleepy Sol and the pair led past the stand about two lengths in front of Muscari and Spoony, with Ruapapa, Barometer and Holymond following. The field bunched up along the back, where Thursby, Holymond and Barometer closed up. 1 Ed fen Hall was still in front at the top hnd turned for home just-_ clear of Spoony, with Sleepy Sol, Muscari and Holymond next. Eden Hall was not troubled m the mn home, and won decisively by a length from Spoony, who beat Sleepy Sol by a length and a-half. Holymond was fourth, with Barometer, Ruapapa and Muscari in a .bunch next. Eden Hall won in convincing style. Spoony ran an honest race, but Barometer disappointed. Along the back he looked to have a chance, but failed to finish with any dash. The winner and the runner-up are trained by J. T. Jamieson, but race for different owners. A big field lined up for the County Handicap, Lady Lois being a good favourite over Iliingar. "Miss Lucullus and King Multifid were first into their stride. King Multifid Jed along the back from Miss Lucullus. Adju3tor, Delightment and I'llingar. Crossing the top Adjustor took charge, and was first into the straight, closely attended by Miss Lucullus and Delightbent, with King Multifid next. Delightment drew away in the straight and won by two lengths from Adjustor. with Miss Lucullus a head away, third. Lady Arch was fourth and then came St. Lucas, Thurnrosao and Iliingar. Delightment won easily and should win again in similar company soon. Lady Lois was never prominent. The winner and second horse both returned substantial dividends. Considering his forward running in the Maiden Plato Delightment was at a Kreat price. An Exciting Finish. For the Hikurangi Hack Handicap, New Moon was a solid favourite, with Blue Sky and Schorr also in strong demand. Schorr found his feet quickest and showed the way round the bend and along the back from Quandong, Luxurious and New Moon. Nearing the top Blue Sky moved up and took charge to lead into tho straight from Luxurious, Quandong and Marble Mount, with Festina Lente moving up. At the distance Blue Sky. Luxurious, Quandong and Marble Mount were almost on terms and battling hard. Then Festina Lento and New Moon came along ori the outside. The outcome was a thrilling finish, Festina. Lente winning by a head from Luxurious. who defeated New Moon by a similar margain. Blue Sky was a head away fourth, with Quandong, Schorr and Marble Mount almost in line. New Moon finished well and should bo improved by the race. Schorr lost the leading position at the top and did not appear to be at home in the going round the bends. Pavo was a short-priced favourite for tho Manaia Handicap, being over twico as well backed as the second fancy, Dave. Thera was a slight' delay at the post, but a fair start was effected. Dave began best, to bo boob joined by Pavo, and the pair led along the from Tita.ness, Prince Abbey and Hoariri. Nearing the lop Hoariri moved up and turning for home he was almost or, terms with Dave and Pavo. Dave was doing best and in tho end ho won nicely from Pavo, who beat Day Guard by a length. Hoariri. .who may bo improved by ithe race, was fourth and Chairman fifth Day Guard was unlucky in the early Biases', but finished fast. With, the exception of Kendal, who was at a good price, all the runners received nolid support in the Parahaki Handicap. Aurumavis being favourite. Quincoma piloted the field round the bend and was then steadied, leaving Potoanui in charge. Potoanui was the leader along the back and led into the straight from Aurutnavis, Queen Arch, Uralla and Quincoma. Aurumavis challenged at the distance, but Quincoma finished fast on the outside and heat her bv half a length, Potoanui being close ur>, third Queen Arch was fourth, and Uralla fifth. , 1 DETAILS OF THE RACING. The first occasion on which the race in question was run over two miles was in 1888. Nelson ran unplaced in the Ellerslie race that year. NOTES BY PHAETON. LIMERICK IN AUSTRALIA. Though Limerick has been defeated in four of the six races he has contested in New South Wales, the strength of the respective sums t.hat attached to the second positions he filled respectively in the A.J.C. Derby and Craven Plate brings the total earnings of the New Zealand gelding in the opening stage of the Australian campaign in which he is engaged to £3580. Limerick had two races of a very searching character within tho space of a few days at the A.J.C. Meeting, but he is apparently of such a hardy constitution that he may be called upon for another race 10-morrow. The New Zealand gelding is engaged in the Clibborn Stakes, a mile race for three-year-olds at. special weights. Limerick has incurred a slb penalty, but he has still the reasonable impost of 8.9. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch states that Shining Armour was struck out of tho New Zealand Cup at 9 a.m. yegtcrday. It is stated that Commendation will not bo seen under silk again until the New Zealand Derby comes up for decision at Riccarton on Novembor 8. The four-year-old Money Order, who has not raced sipco last spring, will, it is stated, probably be a contestant at the Wellington spring meeting. Eden Hall and Spoony, who filled first and second places respectively in the Whangarei Cup yesterday, are stable-mates, but represent separate interests. It was stated some little time back that Mr. W. G. Stead had sold Imitation. According to advices to hand from Hawke's Bay. the Absurd gelding is still owned by his breeder. It is quito possible that a French-bred colt may be numbered among the thoroughbreds in the Dominion at an early date. At the Deauville sales, held in August, Mr. Eliot R. Davis bought three yearlings. At a meeting of the stewards of tb» Wellington Racing Club this week, Messrs. H. Coylo (handicapper). W. P. Russell (judge), and C. O'Connor (starter) were reappointed to their respective positions for the ensuing year. It transpires that Mr. A. B. Williams' horses wero entered for events at the Wellington spring meeting, but that prior to the date fixed for closing the nominations the entries made for the Hawko'a Bay horses were cancelled. Eden Hall, who led the field home in the Whangarei Cup contest yesterday, was bought in May last by Mr. C. G. Macindoe, and this was his first Buccess under the colours of the Auckland sportsman. Eden Hall is a four-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey from Toll Gate. The Taranaki sportsman Mr. A.' Alexander met with a serious loss recently when tho colt foal by Chief Ruler from Silver Link was found dead ii) a paddock with it broken neck. It is a mystery how tho youngster met with the injury that caused his death, but it is assumed that in playing about he fell over. The winner's portion of the stake attached to tho Members' Handicap, run at tho Australian Jockey Club's meeting last Wednesday and won bv the New Zealand gelding Battlement, was £777. Battlement is a descendant of Martian, and tho stake record by equines of the Martagon horse now amounts to £326,177. Whon tho New Zealand filly Eulalio scored p. victory in the Gimcrack Stakes at Rnndwick last Wednesday she captured a stako in exces of the IGOOgns. which she cost when bought a3 a yearling last February. The added money to the Gimcrack Stakes was £2OOO. but the subscriptions in tho shape of forfeits and sweepstakes increased tho stako to £2662. Tho second prize was £4OO, and tho third of £2OO has also to be deducted, which leaves £2062 as the sum that comes to Mr. G. D. Greenwood as a result of Eulaiie's success—a nice stake as the result of tho first flutter under silk. * AUSTRALIAN RACING. CRAVEN PLATE CONTEST. HOW WINDBAG WON. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 7. In commenting o.n the race for the Craven Plate at Eandwick yesterday, tho Sydney Morning Herald says:—"Pho_ Craven Ilatc was one of the most interesting races oyer run at Eandwick. When tho barrier lifted, Windbag got away badly and six furlongs Irorn homo Vahcare had so many lengths' lead that she appeared to have everything her own way. Munro. on Windbag, did not bustle his horse, and it was not till the half-mile post was reached that he moved Windbag up to third place, just in front of The Hawk. Windbag then at every stride gradually reduced the gap and turning into the straight ho was at Valicare's heels. Approaching the distance, Windbag was in front and q_ little later Limerick was taken to the rails in an endeavour to pass Valicaro. who went out toward Windbag. It was a thrilling finish, in which tho best horse won. The Daily Telegraph, in commenting on this samo race, say 3 Valicare was first to enter the straight. Then for a moment it appeared as though Windbag would win comfortably, but his stern chase of Valicaro had its effect and Munro had to bring the w_hip into play. Twice aftor that Windbilg beaten, but his great heart stuck to him and ho just lasted long onough to beat Limerick by a head. TRAINING NOTES. CAULFIELD AND FLEMINGTON A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Oct. 7.
