VANITY IN WOMEN.
—— BEARING ON LONG LIFE.
FAMOUS SURGEON'S OPINION*
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 29. "Is vanity in women the real cause of the longer life which the feminine sex enjoys over the men of England and Australia ?" was a question put to Sir W. Arbuthnot Lane. Sir William did not deride the theory, although he stated that lie would prefer to say that women's self-respect was the real cause of their longer life. It was this respect for themselves which made them pay greater attention than men to the care of their teeth, bathing, exercise, diet, and other things which improved their appearance. He said the happiness of women was closely connected with clothes. A woman in a shabby dress was a different person from what she was when well dressed. Sir William concluded by saying that the modern girl with her scantier clothes was cleaner than the girl of the same type used to be.
