ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.

The appeal to be made to-day on behalf of the St. John Ambulance is one which should need little commendation. The very essence ,of this institution is service to those who need it, as it binds up the wounds of the injured and cares for the sick who might otherwise suffer lack of attention. The work is done without fee or reward. For the maintenance of its activities the association depends on what is given freely to it, money which is speedily transmuted into service that it gives just as freely. When, therefore, it comes to the public asking to be armed afresh to continue its campaign in the causo of humanity, it should not ask in vain. Whatever is given to-day will be applied very speedily to good purpose. There is nothing spectacular about the appeal. It is being made as quietly as the work is done week in and week out. It should not suffer on that account; for behind it is substantial evidence that what it produces will be applied to-work having a claim on the sympathy of everyone with a thought to spare for the welfare of others. To-day's campaign for funds can therefore be very heartily commended to the public, in the confidence that it will not deny the ready response Auckland makes when the cause deserves an unloosening of the purse strings.
