VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED.
GOODS AND MONEY OBTAINED
REMAND MADE FOR SENTENCE
Four charges of obtaining by valueless cheques goods offa total value of £22 Ms 6d, including a bicycle valued at £l2 10s, and smiths of money totalling £2B 5s 6d, were admitted by Thomas Kelly, aged 35 (Mr. Bone), in the Police Court yesterday. Senior-Detective Hammond said a storekeeper at Albany lost his cheque-book and accused said he found it on tho road. He came into town and got a lot of easygoing people who were looking for trade to cash them. The store at Albany had been broken into and there was a chance that accused would also bo charged with breaking and entering. He with two children. He had been in New Zealand only 14 months and nothing was previously known against him. Ho had been in custody for a week on remand. Mr. Bono said accused met with an accident and had been 'out of work for months. He was ju desperate straits and the offences were the result of a sudden impulse. The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt: It was a two days' impulse. Mr. Bone added that most of the goods could be returned, and accused had a job to go to. Tho magistrate said that on account of accused's family he was loth to send him to 'gaol, and remanded him for sentence for a week to obtam a report from the probation officer. Accused was allowed bail in his own recognisance of £SO.
THEFT CHARGES ADMITTED. A pica of guilty was entered by Frank Johnson, aged 30, against whom there were three charges of stealing sums of money totalling £1 17s 3d from Guilia Cutall, at Wanganui, and a further charge of stealing a chisel at Auckland. Mr. Hammond snid accused had been employed as a baker's carter at Wanganui. He had received money from customers and had not accounted for it to his employer. The chisel was stolen from a carpenter's bench. Accused was placed on probation for 12 months, and was ordered to make restitution.
HOTEL LICENSEE ASSAULTED. Roland Charles Gardner, nged 22, was charged with assaulting John Charles Griffin. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said Griffin was the licensee of a hotel. Accused and a companion were creating a disturbance in the bar and were put out. Griffin stood at the door to prevent them from returning, when accused went up and punched-him on the nose. A fine of £2. with costs £1 2s 6d, in default seven days' imprisonment, was imposed.
