AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

MOUNT ROSKILL TRANSPORT

EDENDALE TRAMWAY STOPS

The Auckland City Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. Paildon, presiding. % Advice was received from the Mount Roskill Read Board to the effect that a start would be made about November J to pave the carriageway of Dominion Road from Boundary Road to Mount Albert Road in concrete. In view of the altered circumstances in regard to motorbus transport the council was asked to state whether it was intended to extend the tramway system so as to serve the rapidly-growing-portion of Mount Roskill district. The matter was referred to the Tramways Committee. The Mount Albert Borough Council wrote asking if the council would consider changing the name of New North Road, between Rymonds Street and Dominion Road, to Eden Terrace. Tha city engineer said the borough apparently desired the. change to avoid confusion in numbering. He suggested "Mount Albert Road* or Kingsland as possible names, but suggested a decision should be deferred until the council had defined its policy in reference to tho widening and extension of Belgium Street to New North, Road. It was decided to reply in terms of tho engineer's report. Referring to the proposal to construct a footpath <1 ft. 6in. wide on the west sido of High Street, whereas the path on tho eastern side is to be 6ft. wide, Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Company, Limited, wrote suggesting that in fairness to all parties equal treatment should tfe meted out to both sides, as paths of less than sft. 6in. in width would seriously restrict *the usefulness of this thoroughfare in relieving traffic 'congestion. The city engineer pointed out that the only alternative would bo to reduce the carriageway from 24ft. to 23ft., which was undesirable. Tho teijuest was referred to (lie Works Committee.

~ As the result of representations by Mr. M. J; Coyle, the council decided to lay dowri a cricket pitch on tho eastern sidb of the Western Springs property, the cost not to exceed £lO. " The engineer was instructed to pave in concrete the strip of roadway leading from the northern highway to the soldiers' entrance at the W.iikumeto Cemetery, at an estimated cost'of. £72. It was decided to make provision in next year's estimates for a caretaker's cottage at the entrance gates. The request of 130 residents, presented fey Miss E. Melville, for a rearrangement of tho stopping places on tho Edendale tram route so as to provide a stop at Kenneth Avenue, was again mentioned. The Tramways Committee had previously reported against the alteration, as this would involvo changing a number of 6ther stopping places. Tho committee wis asked to reconsider tho matter, and recommended that the previous decision bo adhered to, adding that, in the event of any rearrangement of stops being made, tho matter of a stop at Kenneth Avenue would be considered. This report was adopted. The council decided to take a full page in the projected New Zealand Supplement to tho London Times, to be issued simultaneously in London and New Zealand on tho dato of the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of York. Tho price for a full page will bo £6OO, attd tho council decided to talco that space provided an assurance could bo received from the Government that such expenditure would bo validated next session. Thero was a division of opinion as to tho need for this expenditure, and on being put to the vote a tie resulted. Tho Mayor gave his casting vote in favour.
