LAKE TAUPO FISHING.

| QUESTION OF LICENSES, RECOMMENDATIONS OF ANGLERS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] RAETIHI. Sunday. The council of the Waimarino Acclimatisation .Society met on Friday, Mr. A. W. Ash well, presiding. The Wellington society advised that the matter of the proposed license fees for fishing in Lake Taupo would come up for discussion at the annual conference on Wednesday.' It considered that free fishing ' throughout the Government, district should be stopped! ■■The" following recommendations have been sent'-to Mr. R. W. Smith*, M.P., from anglers'of this district: —That the Government issue to any holder of a license obtained from >any acclimatisation society, including < Rotorua district,; a licepse to fish.'in the Taupo. district for the sum of £2 to a resident of New Zealand; that the fee- of. 30s to residents of Taupo be increased to £2; that a general license to 'fish in New Zealand be issued to.tourists for the sum of £l2; failing this, that the Government pay as damages for loss, of revenue to acclimatisation societies whose districts border that of Taupo and Roto-, rua the sum of the total loss, which " can be ascertained by the number of licenses issued in.previous seasons; that the number of licenses *to bo .issued free be'-regu-lated ,in accordance with the Fisheries Act, 1903, i.e., "any person may fish on his own property" without taking out . a license"; that the regulations of the Fisheries Act be strictly enforced in Taupo. It is considered that, owing to the large number of trout taken, 20 fish per day should be the maximum number allowed. The following remits have been forwarded for consideration at the conference:— That, owing to the damage done to native and imported birds by stoats,' weasels- and ferrets, representation be made to the Government to remove the protection from these animals; that, in the event of the Government removing the protection all societies bo requested to pay a uniform royalty for the destruction of these animals. That, in the event of the Government deciding protection taust. be removed from deer, it be not removed for three months after the close of the next shooting season. . That the conference discuss the advisability of all societies paying, a uniform royalty, for the destruction of shags.
