DEVONPORT SHIELD GAMES. ARETA EXTEND UNIVERSITY. SOMERVILLE AND WESLEY DRAW. The opening games in the Devonport Shield competition were played at the Remutfra hockey grounds 011 Saturday. Chief interest centred in the contest between Areta and University, and after an exceptionally keen and interesting game. University won by 1 goal to 0. Wesley and Somerville provided a spectacular game, which ended in a draw, 3 goals each. Mount Eden and Stanley provided an interesting struggle, Mount Eden winning by 3 goals to 2. The display by the backs was very solid with occasional flashes ot brilliancy. University was first to be dangerous, Hamilton and Clayton gaining ground with well-placed cross passes. Davis effected a brilliant save on tho circle's edge, and hit back to midfield, where Seelen and Hamilton took up the running, and a strong assault; was launched on the Areta coal. University maintained the pressure but the Areta defence proved eoual to every demand. Areta replied with a counter attack that penetrated. University's defence, and exciting play followed in the circle. University's backs were in fine form and their defence was almost impregnable. The spell ended without score.
