MARRIED WOMAN'S OFFENCES DRINK BLAMED FOR TROUBLE. PENALTY, OF.FIVE POUNDS. "A woman got 14 days' imprisonment for shoplifting just the other day, said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., m the Police Court on Saturday when Mary Lda Thomas, a. middle-aged married' woman, was charged with stealing a box ofaspros valued at Is 6d from Eendells, Ltd., and three boxes of ■ face-powder valued at 112s from George Court and Sons, Ltd., on- Friday. Mr. 1 Fihlay,. for accused, pleaded guilty on the first charge. Senior-Detective Hammond said accused was detected by an assistant at Eendells, Ltd., taking a.bpxot aspros from a tray. She was taken to the manager's office and admitted the theft, to the police. Three boxes of face-powder wore found loose in her bag. She would not give any explanation as., to, where she obtained them, but admitted she had been m George Court and Sons' just before. Mr. Hammond "added that he'had understood accused would pleadl guilty to both oharges, but if she denied the charge of "stealing from George Court and Sons he would ask for. a remand for a week.

Mr. Finlav: There is a certain amountof tragedy in the case. Accused's husband is a good working man. Accused," however, has a weakness for drink and tt is no doubt due to this that sho committed the thefts. It will probably be best to pilead guilty to both charges., The Magistrate: What about a-prohi-bition order? • •

Accused intimated she was willing to take out an.order. - '> . »-

The Magistrate: Shoplifting is a serious thing. Accused will be fined £5 and placed on probation for 12 months. A prohibition order will also be issued.
