POVERTY IN NORTH.
GENEROUS RESPONSE MADE. CLOTHING AND GROCERIES. jThere has been a generous and wid&spread response to the appeal made on behalf of the poor families on the northern gtimlands, with the result that the steamer which left Auckland for the North yesterday morning carried six tons measurement .of clothing and about £IOO worth of groceries. Parcels, of olothing in large numbers have been .received daily at the offices of the Auckluand City Mission and by SisterEsther, and six large bales, the actual weight of which was almost a ton, were loaded on to the steamer yesterday. The groceries • alone occupied all the available space in a large lorry. The clothing, which consists of garments for, . men, women and children, will be delivered to each of six schools and distributed from there among the various families. Two large boxes of cakes and sweets were also sent by the boat. The city missioner, Rev. Jasper Calder, and Sister Esther, are still receiving parcels, from various parts of the city and suburbs, while there is still about £4O in cash to be spent on groceries to be sent by the next boat.
