" Tawera."- -Desert Gold won the wholo of the 14 races sho contested at three years old. At four years old she was defeated or. two occasions. " Wager."—At three years old Seahorse contested two races in Australia. Ho ran unplaced in the Essendon Stakes and Australian Cup, decided at Flcminjiton in the autumn of 1900. T. 8., Razorback.—ln the decision of the Islington Plato (1921) the places were filled by Thespian, Gloaming, and Silver Link, who finished in that order. The Hawk was the only other starter. The field that contested the Auckland Plate at the same meeting included Gloaming, Sasanof, Rouen, Vagabond. Starland, and Theßpiun. Gloamins won by three tr.rul a-half lengths from Sasanof. with Rouen in third place. NOTES BY PHAETON. THE KING'S HORSES. No horse* up to what is tensed the classic standard has yet been credited to King George V.: indeed the small number of successes registered by horses carrying His Majesty's colours lias formed tho Eubject of much writing. lor it goes without savins that, everybody would greatly rejoice if a horse up to tho standard of Persimmon, who won the Derby and St. Leger under the colours of King Edward VII.> was on hand to carry King George's colours. That happy event, however. i 3 not yet in sight. Up to tho last mail to hand leaving England tlie only victory registered this season by a horse nominated by His Majesty was a Welter Plate, run at the Bibury meeting last month. This event waff won by Bowood. an aged gelding. Any victory for the King's colours never fails to evoke enthusiasm, and such was in evidence when Bowood scored his success. The only colt nominated by His Majesty for next year 3 Derby is St. Svlvestro. a descendant of the French-bred sire Nonvel An. Whether that colt has any pretensions to the Derby standard must be left for time to reveal. ROYAL TEA'S DEFEAT. Though the Auckland geldine Royal Tea was defeated in hia first race at three years old. Sydney critics give the son of Tea Tray credit for making a courageous bid for victory when he ran Becond to Lilah in the decision of the Denh&m Court Handicap at Warwick Farm. It is stated that the gelding wanted a race to top off his condition, and it is deduced that when next ho faces the starter he will be better fttt9d on tho score cf condition to battle cut a hard finish. RAMPION AND LIMERICK. In a reference to the Derby colts Rampion and Limerick 11 Pilot." of the Sydney Referee, penned the following The Derby favourite, Rampion, is progressing very ! satisfactorily, and, if he is defeated in the B'obartville Stakes next week, it is certain his owners and trainer will be disappointed. He has lost nothing in appearance Bince the autumn, and. though liojnß racing men are dubious whether ho will- stay, they have nothing tangible to go upon. In his two-year-old races he finished as if he would get a distance. 'Whatever doubt there may be as to Rampion getting a distance, I should fancy there is none in respect of Limerick." MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. In the decision of tho thrae-year-old Handicap at Rosehill last Saturday , the Auckland-owned colt Subdivision carried 7.11 into third place behind . Cimcn (7.13) and Yalasian (9.0). In the High-weight Handicap decided at Rosehill last Saturday, Cawnporo was allotted 10.3. but it has to be stated that the minimum for the race in question was fixed at 8.7. Count Cavour had his first race in Australia on the 14th inat.. when he contested tho Denham Court Handicap at Warwick Farm. " The Count" carried 9.1 and f finished unplaced. It transpires that the New Zealand cok Star Stranger was called upon to carry an impost (9.0) in conformity with weight-for-age in the Rosehill Handicap (one mile and a-atiarter), decided last Saturday, while Mountain Prince (8.3). who beat him. 'had an impost 12lb below the standard scale. The Gisborne sportsman Mr. D. J. Barry has a trio of three-year-olds to carry ~ his colours this season in the shape of Threadneedle, Automaton, and Ngawati. and, as they are all reported to be training on satisfactorily. they may be expected to fipro among the contestants at spring in Auckland. A two-year-old filly' that promises to come to hand early is the bay daughter of Paper Money and Rebekah, owned by Mr. F. Earl. Rebekah. who is a daughter of Bezonian, will be remembered as having made a bold bid for victory at three years old in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap of 1919. when she filled second place to Uncle Ned. Sydney papers now to hand furnish particulars in regard to tho weights carried in tho Carlingford Handicap (one mile\ which was won by the New Zealand colt Limerick nt tho Rosehill meetins last Saturday. Limerick carried 8.5; while" Quantart, who finished second, was weighted at 8.8. Tho New Zealand Derby winner Runnymede was weighted at 8.11. but we have yet to learn whether that gelding comprised one of the field of contestants. Black Cat. the brown daughter of Absurd and Mascot, who is now ranged up with the four-year-old division, is reported to bo training on nicely. In her two-year-old days Black Cat won a couple of races, but at three years old she suffered defeat in each of the 11 Tacea which she contested. Her second to Glentruin in the decision of tho Electric Handicap at Ellerslie )ast December was not. however, without merit, as she ran her English-bred rival to a neck in a fast-run six furlongs. In the decision of the New Zealand. Derby of 1924 Inferno ran Count Cavour to half a head. and. as tho mile and a-haif was compared in '2m Bss. there seemed to be good grounds for assuming that the bic son of Absurd would be seen to advantuge in races up to 12 furlonga. There is no talk now in regard to Inferno over a journey extending to 12 furlongs, and he is evidently to be confined to sprint events. Inferno is engaged in the Flying Handicap and Owen Handicap, both of which ate to ba run over six furlongs, at the Wanganui spring meeting next month. Tho V.R.C. Derby winner Spearfelt failed to win distinction at four years old, but, though ho could bo referred to as a disappointment at that age, it has always to ho remembered that he suffered a fall while contesting the Sydney Cup of 1925 and that may have affected his constitution a lot more than external observation would reveal. However, Spearfelt is now said to bo quite himself again and, according to report, his owners have some hopes of the son of Spearhead capturing the Metropolitan Stakes nt Rand wick on October 4. With 9.4 opposite Spearfelt'a name for tho raco in question that means only lib. below weight-for-age, F . O that the 1924 Derby winner will require to be quite at his "best to win the big handicap at Randwick.
