FRANKLIN SHOWGROUND.
' QUESTION OF A LEASE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Friday. .Following aij offer by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company to lease about three acres of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society's showground, in Station Road, Pnkekohe, as a new site for the company's saleyards, a special meeting of the society was held at Pukekohe this afternoon to consider the matter. The president, Mr. W. J. A. Moore, moved the adoption of a recommendation from the General Committee that the meeting approve the granting of the lease and authorise the committee to proceed with the matter. Mr. A. Best seconded the motion. It was stated that as the society was a public institution it would have to sell the lease by public auction. The term would bo for 21 years, with right of renewal for another 21 years. The remuneration would be either a fixed annual rental or a percentage on the turnover in the saleyards, which the company would remove from the present site in East Street. The society would have the right to use the yards for show purposes. Messrs. R. F. Wilkinson and J. Roulston contended that saleyards were not suitable for exhibiting pedigree stock. It was also suggested that saleyards might prove a detriment to the society's property. An amendment was then put by Messrs. E. Allan and Dynes Fulton, that the matter be deferred until the annual meeting, and that a special committee take evidence meanwhile and submit a recommendation to the annual meeting. This was carried by 23 votes to 21, and Messrs, Allan, H.- E. Wily and J. ■. N. Massey were appointed as the special committee. It. was stated that the annual meeting would be held in about two months' time.
