TENDER FOR TRAM RAILS.
THE CITY COUNCIL'S ORDER. PROPOSAL TO COUNTERMAND. Following upon the decision of tho Auckland-City Council to 31V0 preferen.o ti a British tender for the supply of 600 ton 3of steel tramway rails' Mr. T Bloodworth has given notice that at ne>:t meeting he will move that the resolution respecting the contract be rescinded. The tenders for the rails were considered by the council on August 19, when the lowest tender receivetl'was that for United States Steel rails at £6569 19s 4d. There were four British tenders, raiging from £8544 10s to £9097, but, in the case of three, delivery depended on th«" termination of the coal strike. The fourth, £9097, and the American tender specified delivery before the end of the year. In view of the fact that the rails will be urgently required by December to keep tramway gangs working thu Tramways Committee suggested that thfj American tender should be accepted, but the council decided to give preference to the British tender, provided the local agents could give a satisfactory guarantee that delivery would be given within the contract time.
