WAITEMATA COUNTY.
the cost of hoad work, FUNDS BECOMING EXHAUSTED. The . Waitemata County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. G. O'Halloran, presiding. . The engineer reported that the past month's activities had been confined to tepair work on metalled roads with the exception of loan metalling jobs w the kumeu and Waikomete Ridings, where a little new metalling had been dons as weather permitted. Maintenance in the Waikaincte Waipareira Ridings had been particularly heavy owing to certain roads having to carry all the traffic on account of the main highway being closed. Omnibus services in the ridings had also added to the cost of maintenance. The present position was that the riding funds had been nearly exhausted in repair work, while the condition of the roads became worse and worse. When all the available money was spent the roads could not be further maintained. Steady progress was being made on the main highway m the Birkenhead Riding, there being 2500 cubic yards of metal dumped on the road.., Culverts were being lengthened and everything pointed to an early start with the work in the summer. It was resolved to apply for an additional £llOO to be placed on the Public Works Department Supplementary Estimates. The Minister of Public Works notified that the Motufcara Settlement reads had been declared county roadj:. The commissioner of Crown lands advised that the City Council proposed to annex the Swanson Cemetery reserve and to change its purpose and add it to the adjacent domain. The opinion was expressed that the ground should be held sacred as many old Waitakere residents were buried there.
