EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS.
PROFITS MADE DURING JULY. LOSS ON SOUTH ISLAND LINES. —r~ [b? telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. A working profit qf £41,001 is shown by- the Railway Department's accounts tot the four weeks ended July 24. The corresponding return last year showed a working profit of £34,686. The receipts comprised £292,796 from the North Island railways, £195,761 from the South Island and £41,420 from miscellaneous services—a total of £529,978. The corresponding expenditure was £255,266, £208,320 and £24,390—a total of £483,977. The North Island railways thus earned a working profit of £36,530, but there was a loss on the South Island system of £12,559 The net revenue from miscellaneous services was £17,030. The four returns for the current financial year, covering 115 days, show working profits totalling £460,137, as against £347,060 for a period of 109 days last year. This year's total comprises £273,431 from the North Island railways, an increase of £36,418; £113,395 from the South Island railways, an increase of £61,376; and £73,311 from miscellaneous services, an increase of £15,283.
