AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

MATCH AGAINST KENT. HOME SIDE OUT FOR 321. WHOLE DAY AT THE WICKET. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. Reuter. LONDON. Aug. 25. For the first clay's play in the cricket match Australia v. Kent, at Canterbury, to-day the weather was warm and the wicket was good. The attendance totalled 12,000. The Kent captain, Chapman, won the toss and elected to hat. Hardinge and Ashdown opened to the bowling of Gregory and Hendfy. At the outset the game was slow. Gregory was uncertain in his length and his deliveries kicked. Hendry was consistent, but he was unlucky not to have secured Ashdown's wicket early. When they faced Mailey and Grimmett the batsmen were more at their ease and both were responsible for some sparkling cuts. Practically all the runs were secured on the off side. When Ashdown had made 32 he was dropped by Ellis at the wicket off Ryder. He gave a second chance four balls later when he hit Mailey to leg through Ryder's hands. The bowling was changed frequently and the score rose very slowly. When it had reached 85 Mailey beat Ashdown, who had given a vigorous and forceful display of cutting. Three Wickets for 171 Runs. Ryder maintained a good length. He pegged away en the off side, but without avail. Woolley made an unenterprising start. Then he settled down to cut Grimmett attractively. The pair carried the score to 122. Then Hardinge fell into a trap set by Macartney, who gave him a full toss on the leg side, which he hit hard into the hands of Collins at squaro leg. After the first half hour Hardinge had played attractive cricket. He hit seven fours. Woolley. and Seymour were content to take things easily. Sultry weather dominated the game, the running was slow and .the fielding casual. Seymour had made 12 when ho was missed by Hendry off Mailey. Ho had two more lives when he had scored 16, but was smartly stumped on going out to one from Mailey. The board then read 171 for three wickets. Batsmen's Lively Display. Seventeen runs later Woolley played over a ball from Mailey and gave Ellis a second victim. He had batted 105 minutes and had driven characteristically. His score included eight fours. Chapman played his usual forceful game. He amused the crowd by making violent attempts to hit Mailey to leg. He succeeded after a couple of overs. Then he gave Collins a very hot chance when he had made seven. J. Bryan played Ryder with difficulty. The bowler got a sharp nip from the pitch. He sent down four maiden overs in succession to Bryan, who was missed by Mailey in the slips off Gregory when he had scored 23. Chapman was erratic and was eventually caught at the wicket off a weak stroke at a long hop. He had been at the crease an hour, and had hit one six and threo fives. The total then was 251 for five wickets. G.' Bryan had a hectic over when he faced Mailey. He drove him for a fouf and a two arid, then lifted him over the rop.es for . six In attempting to hit another six, he was well taken by Macartney in the longfield. Hubble was shaping well when he was admirably caught at. mid-off fjom a full toss. In the closing stages of the day Bryan forced the pace. He drove powerfully. In attempting to make a huge stroke ho skipd the ball to Richardson at mid-on. He had batted 130 minutes and had hit six fours. His batting in the second half of the innings was much improved and was of an attractive description. The score at bis dismissal was 317 for nin<? wickets.
