BREACHES OF AWARD.

CHRISTCHURCH FIRM FINED. APPRENTICESHIP MATTERS. [bx telegraph.—-press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Fines amounting to £lO were inflicted on a Christ-church firm of plasterer?, Orchard and Simmonds, who were convicted in the Magistrate's Court to-day by Mr. H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., on four charges of breaches of the award govern- ■ ing their trade. The prosecutions wero brought, by the inspector of awards. Defendants pleaded guilty to employing more than the number of apprentices allowed by the award, employing an apprentice without the permisfion of the .Apprenticeship Committee, paying loss flth|n the award rate of wages to an apprentice and making false entries in the wages and overtime book. In regard to the last-mentioned charge counsel said the defendants, whp were increasing the wages' of the apprentice in respect of whom the complaint was as his proficiency had increased, employed a number of casual labourers. If it. were seen by these men "that the apprentice was not receiving full wages there would be trouble ar»cl defendants therefore arranged for him to sign for full wages and the apprentice did so without complaint. Defendants were fined £2 on the first charge, £1 on the second alid £2 on the third. In regard to the fourth charge of making false entries, the magistrate eaid it was a very serious matter and inflicted a fine of £5.
