RAILWAY REDUCTIONS. NEW RATES OPERATE NEXT WEEK The reduced railway tariff on artificial manures and raw material, excepting lime, for the manufacture of manures, will mean a considerable saving to far-, mers. The reduced charges will come into effect next Monday and except otherwise specified artificial manures, including basic slag, bonedust, guano, and kainit, also phosphate rock, nitrate oif soda, sulphate of ammonia and sulphur for use in the manufacture j>f artificial, manures, will be charged at the new rate. j Formerly the charge for. the railage of manures was on a flat rate. Now, however, there is a further reduction on consignments of six tons or more. On the whole the reduction on the one-ton rate is about 25 per cent., and this is increased to 40 per cent, for a minimum of six tons. Consignments in any quantity of less than six'tons, will be charged as for six'tons'or at the rate applicable to consignments of'a minimum weight of one ton. Any quantity of-less than one; ton will be charged as one, ton. Following .are several... instances of the reductions, which vary' according <- to -mileage Under the old schedule the minimum rate a ton was 3s 2d for one mile. The new r3te is 2s 5d a ton for the one-ton consignment, and on the six-ton basis is Is lid. From two to 12 miles the rate was 3s 6d. a ton. This has been reduced to 2s 2d and 2s Id a ton respectively. On 50 miles the old rate , was 9s sd. The new charges will. be 7s Id. and 5s Bd. Similarly, on 100 miles; where the old charge was 13s 6<i the new rate is 10s 2d and 83 2d The saving under .the new- rate is noticed particularly on consignments for long distances. On 500 miles, which is 74 miles further than from Auckland to Wellington, the old rate; was..36s, lOd. a ton, and the new rates, are 27s 8d on ! the one-ton basis and 22s Id on the six- j ton basis.
