CHANNEL SWIMMERS.
NUMEROUS ASPIRANTS. SIX FAIL IN ONE NIGHT. A', ana N.Z. .LONDON., Aug#24; Since Miss Gertrude Ederlp's conquest of the English Channel numerous .aspirants haye attempted the feat. Six swimmers started last night, but all of them gave up the attempt owing to various causes, after hours of fruitless 'effort.- _ .v'.;- , r | " Otto Kemmerich, at the end, of six hours' swimming, collided with a large fish, variously described as a dogfish, a porpoise and a shark. He was. dragged from the water in a semi-conscious condition and in great pain. Three women aspirants succumbed to sickness caused by the roughness of-the sea. This was so pronounced that waves were dashing aboard the accompanying tugs.
