PUTTING ON THE CLOCK.
SUMMER TIME BILL. CONSIDERATION BY i COUNCIL. DEFEAT -OF AMENDMENTS. [BX TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday. : When the Legislative Council was in Committee on the Summer Time Bill this afternoon the Hon. T. S. Weston's amendment with a view to permitting shearers and grain threshers to work to New Zealand standard time by mutual consent with'the employers was lost by 16' votes to 11; the majority of members objecting that to be successful there must be no exemptions to the operation of the scheme.
On clause 4, prescribing the duration of summer time, the Hon. \G. J. Garland moved a destructive amendment deleting the essential words in order to "kill" the bill,, but this was defeated on the voices. The Hon. E. Newman then moved a new clause providing that the operation of the Act Should be confined to the urban districts of the Dominion. It was pointed out that this would make for confusion and one member referred to the difficulty of defining urban districts. The clause was lost on the voices and the bill was reported without amendment. As a number of members wish to speak on the third reading, it was set down for Wednesday next.
