NEW PLAYING FIELD.

LARGE AREA IN HOBSON BAY. EARLY RECLAMATION .URGED. SCHEME BEFORE CITY > COUNCIL. A proposal to provide a recreation reserve in the western arm of Hobson Bay along the Remuera waterfroni has been submitted to the City Council in a petition from 134 residents" of Remuera.

The petition : sets out that by the Auckland Harbour Board Empowering Act, 1911, the board is empowered to grant a lease of 76 acres of Hobson Bay, between the main sewer and Shore Road, for the purpose of a public domain. An area of 2| acres at the foot of Brighton Road has been set aside as a recrea.tion reserve and nothing has been done to utilise either of these properties for recreation purposes.

It is stated the area of 76 acres is gradually silting up, and the growth of mangroves is extending rapidly and will constitute a menace to, health. The construction of the railway deviation will shortly render it impossible to do any reclamation work except by tipping'rubbish into the area of 76 acres. The petitioners ask that part at least of the 76 acres adjacent to the 2J- acres should be leased from the board and arrangements made for the immediate loan or other utilisation of the board's suctiondredge to pump spoil into the area. Thoy further ask that the area immediately adjacent to the reclamation proposed should be cleaned up and rendered fit for recreation purposes. - The matter is now in the hands of the Parks Committee of the council for consideration. .
