TOBACCO AND HOPS.
INTERESTS OP THE TRADES. DEPUTATIONS TO MINISTERS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION-] WELLINGTON, Friday. A deputation representing the wholesale and retail tobacconists of the Dominion, supported by representatives of the Master Grocers' Association, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and Hairdressers' Assistants, waited upon the Prime Minister and the Minister; of Labour with a request that the Government reconsider its decision not to introduce legislation providing for the licensing, of tobacconists.
Mr. Coates said he would go carefully into the whole matter and if necessary would ask Cabinet to reconsider the question. He doubted if it would be possible to do anything this session. Mr. Anderson said the Shops Hours Bill to be introduced this week might help to overcoming some of the difficulties in connection with the tobacconists' trade. A deputation of Nelson hopgrowers waited upon the Prime Minister in referwaited upon the Prime Minister. In reference ;to the shipment of hops to Australia, it was stated that the market in Australia had been limited by the action of the Government. The deputation . urged Mr. Coates, while in England, to seek to obtain relief and to endeavour to have greater preference granted for Dominion-grown hops, or to ai range that New Zealand hops should be consumed before foreign hops were allowed entry.' / Mr. Coates said he was glad to have the facts of the case. He would givti the matter consideration and confer with, the Minister of Customs regarding the Australian position. .
