THE CITY COUNCIL.

PROPERTY AT COX'S CREEK. PURCHASE AUTHORISED. THE OLD REMUERA LIBRARY. The Auckland City Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, presiding. Messrs. Cashmore Brothers, wrote offering to sell to the council their old mill site at Cox's, Creek for £750, the offer to remain open until August, 31. The Parks Committee recommended that the property should be purchased provided satisfactory terms could be arranged. Mr, J. Robertson objected on tho ground that insufficient information was given, but Mr. J. A. Warnock, chairman cf the committee, said the land was required in connection with the reclamation of the' creek. The city valuer's report was to the effect that the property was worth £IOOO, and quite suitable for commercial purposes It was decided to make the purchase. It was reported that only one tender, that of Turners and Growers, Limited, at an annual rental of £260, had been received for the lease of the triangular piece of land at tho corner of Sturdeo Street opposite the city markets. The tender was declined, and it was decided to offer the lease to Messrs. Turners and Growers at an annual rental of £3OO. The Commissioner of Police advised that he was arranging for the Auckland police to carry on the duties of traffic control until tho evening of September 30. It was decided to thank tho Commissioner for his consideration.

Reporting on the objection lodged by Mr. W.' Winn to tho proposal of the council to take a portion of his property, containing 8.6 perches, for an extension to the Khyber Pass reservoir, tho Waterworks Committee recommended that the decisiou of the council to acquire the property be adhered to. Tho committee was oi opinion that it was expedient that tha proposed works should ho executed and that no private injury for which compensation was not provided by the Public Works Act, would bo done. The council adopted the recommendation. Tho council authorised the removal of the old Remuera Library building and its re-erection in Great North Road, on the western side of the present Point Chevalier Hall, and gave the chief librarian authority to purchase works to the value of £IOO for stocking the library. Mr. J. W. Court was appointed to represent the council at the election to appoint a representative of local bodies on the Seddon Technical College Board. The council decided to have the portion of Wallace Street from Sarsfield Street to the harbour cliff formed and laid out at a cost >of £175, this work, together with repairs to Sentinel Road, to be undertaken when the concrete paving of Jervois Road was being carried out and old metal would be available.
