MOUNT ROSKILL LOAN POLL.

The loan proposal submitted today to the ratepayers of the Mount Roskill Road District is concerned with paving an important thoroughfare with permanent material, and consequently presents a prima-facie case for approval. But .there are special considerations that strengthen its claim to endorsement. First comes the undoubted benefit that the concreting of this particular length of road will confer on the immediate locality. Already this thoroughfare has to serve much local need, and this need is bound to increase as spttlement in this region goes on. Money spent now on a permanent road will effect economy as well as convenience. The cost of maintaining this stretch of only 1040 yards, during last year was £400: it was about £l9O for the first three months of the present year—a charge" of over £750 per annum. To lay it down in concrete will mean an immediate and prolonged saving of maintenance charges, and this fact will doubtless appeal convincingly to all in the district. There is a further justification for a favourable vote. It will enable the Road Board to complete in concrete an arterial road vital to the development of the whole district. The main arterial thoroughfare runs from the city along Dominion Road for about four miles to this unsatisfactory stretch. Beyond this gap the concrete road continues through the Dominion Road extension. It will eventually connect with Mount Roskill Park, Waikowhai Park, and the sea beaches of the Manukau, and be not only the chief thoroughfare for the Mount Roskill district, but also a complete road across the isthmus. It is therefore desirable that this existing gap should be permanently paved as speedily as possibly. Ratepayers cannot fail to {appreciate what good access will mean in inducing settlement and so increasing local revenue. Approval of the loan will tend to lighten, not increase, their burden, and desirably hasten the completion of a first-class road second to none in importance in Auckland's outer area.
