PUBLIC SCHOOLS MATCH. A TEMPORARY CONTROVERSY. Reuter. LONDON, Aug. 11. The cricket match, Austrlia versus a Public Schools fifteen at Lord's, was interrupted by rain in the luncheon hour to-day. Play was not resumed in the afternoon. • When the game opened in the morning the Australian captain, Collins, objected to the Public Schools fielding the whole fifteen, and four boys were removed from the field. Later, however, when Collins was informed that it was the custom to allow 15 fieldsmen in such matches he consented to the return of the four boys. The critics generally comment adversely on what they call the unsportsmanlike action of Collins. They say it created a bad impression and was all the more to be regretted as the match was against inexperienced boys. Collins stated subsequently that the match was discussed before the Australians left home and it was expressly understood that only eleven men should field. As nothing further had been done in 1 the matter he assumed that the arrangement stood. The visitors' score is 80 for two wickers. Dotails are as follow: — . 'AUSTRALIA.—First Innings. Public Schools this morning. They have carried their first, innings score to 215 for seven wickets (Ponsford, c Whittaker, 97; Woodfull, c Kingsley, b May, 84; Ryder, lbw, b May, 5; Hendry, b May, 2; Richardson, b May, 4; Oldfield, not out, 2). ' The weather is bright, but the wicket is soft and wet.
