A tragic occurrence is reported from Nojiremachi, Northern Japan. Owing to the sudderi collapse of a bridge, which was crowded with merrymakers who were watching a local lantern festival, more than 50 people are missing. Recent heavy rains had swelled the river. Only a few people had been rescued when the rapid current swept the remainder away.
